Solstice Arts & Crafts Market

It's the last show I'm doing this year, on Winter Solstice (yay!), a day before Hanukkah starts, and just a few days before Christmas. What a perfect time to pick up a new painting (for $30 and under!), giclee print, coloring book, magnet set, or card! Plus all of the cool handmade stuff the other 40 vendors will have.

December 20th, 2008 from 8am to 3pm, inside the Smith Center at Portland State University!

Whether you need stocking stuffers or main gifts, this will be the place to be. I will be there along with 180 other Portland artists and artisans. Buy awesome, unique gifts and support the local economy!

See you there!

First Friday SE Artwalk--come see a great show!

"Antiquated," 2008 by Lea Keohane. All Rights Reserved.

Several months ago I answered a call for artists by Yelp and Adrienne Fritze of Working Artists Network. The idea was to take phone books and create art with them. The artists involved created a wide range of very interesting pieces, from clothing to paintings and more!

For my own contribution, I decoupaged pieces of a phone book onto a masonite board, then created a stencil of a 1920's telephone and stenciled it on. I wanted to incorporated one of my female characters, but I wasn't sure at first how to make her an important part of the piece. So, inspired by my friend Cara's brilliant Art Nouveau paintings, I decided to put her in a great flapper costume. The idea behind this painting is that, in the age of computers, phone books are a thing of the past. Which they certainly are in my own household! I get a pang of guilt every time new ones show up at my doorstep, as they go straight to the recycle bin.

The phone book mashup project, in conjunction with rdEVOLUTION, a project in which artists explored inter-species survival, will be on display for two months, with an opening tomorrow, Friday September 5th, at the Olympic Mills Commerce Center, at 107 SE Washington St., from
6-8 pm. If you are in Portland, this is a must-see event with new work from over 20 amazing Portland artists!

Portland Goodness!

If you live in Portland, DIY Alert is THE place to get all of your crafty resources! It is a fantastic website with a calendar of crafty events around town, profiles on Portland artists (this week the feature is me!!), and loads of information about classes, creative hot spots and more. Run by the awesome and fabulously sweet Sister Diane of the Church of Craft, who also does a regular podcast. The best thing for me about DIY Alert is that you can subscribe to it, so all of this yummy craft comes weekly to your email. Perfect for those of us who tend to be distracted and forget about awesome websites unless reminded regularly :)

Sorry for all of the Portland-specific news (really, you all should just move here already), but for those of you that live here, you absolutely MUST come see me this Saturday at the Mississippi Street Fair! It will be hard for you to miss me with my new banner, which I just painted yesterday to match my LeaKarts websites (please pardon my couch in the background):

The event is all day Saturday, July 12th, from 10am to 7pm, with art, live music & entertainment, food, beer and margarita gardens (bring me one???), and more!
