Out With the Old...

Goodbye, old paintings. It is funny how much I liked you when I first painted you, enough to keep you in my closet for this long, I suppose. But now it is time to return you to the pristine white ground you once were, ready for something newer, more exiting, and hopefully much, much better!

I have kept some of these old things around for so long, it surprised me that I felt nothing for them as I covered them with a new layer of gesso (the usable ones), or in the case of one dented and moldy canvas, ripped it off the stretcher bars and threw it in the dumpster. They were all student work, but I was once so proud of them. Now I am just really exited to have a bunch of new painting surfaces!

I think what happens, our taste changes..I look at some of my old work and wonder how I though it was good..

I went to art school a looooong time before you did and I still have those precious student works too. That big painting in my living room is one.

I know what you mean, Sometimes i just cut up old skirts or dresses that i've made and make them into something new and much nicer. It feels good to do such a thing sometimes!

You should've taken a photo before you went over it as I am now very curious what was once there!

Ouch! You covered one of your paintings? Oh I could never bring myself to do that but then again, I did mine so long ago they would qualify as antiques!

Thank you for the comments everyone! I should clarify, I did not paint over ALL of my student work (I even have saved quite a few drawings all the way from high school), jut the ones that were truly class projects and didn't speak anything of my work.

Still, I must have had SOME attachment to them at some time, I have been dragging them around for years! :)
